The Renewable Orchestra is the first orchestra to become signatory to the Renewable Orchestra Initiative (ROI), a pledge making a commitment to curb paper waste and energy dependence by using the web and mobile technology. The orchestra is also the founder of the ROI. The Orchestra was inspired to look at its energy and waste footprint when Empower’s Mayor Medford Media asked local businesses to take a pledge to “Go Green, Go Paperless”. The management and musicians of the Renewable Orchestra realized their budget for printed material and the return on the investment was not making economic sense and that they were severely underutilizing the power of the digital age. Thus, they created the Renewable Orchestra Initiative, an arts organization-focused framework, to integrate digital media technology and energy efficiency into all aspects of operational decision-making. The Renewable Orchestra hopes to be a leader for other arts organizations and to have 10 organizations become signatories to the ROI by September 2010. During the 2010-1 season, the Renewable Orchestra is moving ticketing, promotional material, program notes, live events, corporate development and audience development to the web and mobile space.

Principal Timpanist of the Renewable Orchestra, Tim Twitter, said, “We are excited and committed to this critical initiative. We look forward to sharing lessons learned with other organizations and to incentivizing members of the Global Arts Community to join us in this important cause.”
